During the first session of day 4 of the second Test between India and the West Indies, an incident caught the attention of the fans and experts alike.
Jasprit Bumrah, the Indian spearhead, bowled an excellent delivery to John Campbell, which he could not handle well and the Indians went up for an LBW appeal. The on-field umpire gave it as not out. However, the Indian team decided to take the DRS, hoping for a reversal of the decision.
The third umpire saw many replays, but could not get a clear view of whether the ball had hit the bat before striking the pads or not. The original decision was not out and it stood. As Bumrah walked back to his bowling mark, he shared his thoughts with the umpire, saying, “You know it’s out, but the technology can’t prove it.”
The commentators also agreed with Bumrah, but Campbell survived and made full use of this lifeline as he went on to score his first Test century.
He played an exemplary knock of 115 runs off 199 balls, which included 12 fours and three sixes. Later, he was trapped LBW while attempting to play a reverse-sweep to Ravindra Jadeja. This time, the batter reviewed the decision but finally he had to depart. Before going to the pavilion, he took his team to a good position, putting on a 177-run partnership with Shai Hope.
