India legend Yuvraj Singh, who has worked with Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma, reflected on the early days of the two batters and how they have evolved into world-class players.
Yuvraj said that Gill’s hard work is the main reason behind his success in the game.
“I started working with these guys just before Covid,” Yuvraj said in a conversation with Kevin Pietersen. “And obviously, I could feel that Shubman was a notch above, one step ahead. He had already played two games for India, and I could see that he was four times more hardworking than the average cricketer. Every time I told him something, he would happily adapt it in his batting. That’s why he is where he is today.”
After Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket, Gill was handed the captaincy. The 26-year-old led from the front in his first series as captain and emerged as the highest scorer in the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy. Under his leadership, India made a strong comeback after losing the first Test to level the series 2–2. He was later also appointed captain of the ODI team.
Speaking about Abhishek, Yuvraj highlighted the importance of self-belief in shaping his career.
“As for Abhishek, I put him through a process. I told him that if you do this for four years, you’re going to play for India. Think about playing for India, not the IPL. And in exactly four years and three months, he made his debut for India. Some guys don’t understand how much talent they have, but he did. If you follow the process, the results will show,” he added.
Abhishek had a phenomenal year in 2025. He was India’s top batter in the T20I format, scoring 859 runs in 21 matches at an average of 42.95. The 25-year-old currently stands at No. 1 in the ICC Men’s T20I batter rankings.
