South Africa’s stand-in captain Wiaan Mulder capped off a dominant Test series in style, taking the final catch of the match to seal an emphatic innings-and-236-run win over Zimbabwe in the second Test. With that, South Africa clinched the two-match series 2-0. Mulder, who also scored a triple century in the match, was named Player of the Match for his all-round brilliance.

Reflecting on the win and his personal performance, Mulder called the moment “super special” and admitted it was something he had dreamed of since childhood. “Super special, something I dreamt of as a kid. To captain the country is one of the biggest honours you can get as a cricketer. Super proud. I was disappointed in the way I got out in the first Test — felt really good and took a risk and threw away a few more runs.”

Mulder enjoyed a dream series with the bat, scoring 531 runs across two matches, including two centuries. His career-best unbeaten 367 also came during this series. Adding to his impact, he contributed with the ball as well, taking seven wickets.

Looking ahead, Mulder noted that South Africa’s next tour to the subcontinent could require a change in his role, but he remains focused on delivering consistent performances, regardless of team strategy.

“Coming into this game, I tried my best, just let the outcome go and focused on what I could do in the moment. It all came together. I just want to play, whatever role — the coach makes the decision, I’ll try and perform. We go to the subcontinent from here, my role might change but I just want to perform.”

He also credited the overall team performance and the positive signs it holds for South African cricket. “A lot of guys put up their hand, everyone contributed in their own ways and that’s good to see for South African cricket.”
