
Zimbabwe and Namibia have taken a big step towards history by booking their places in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifier for the first time. It will be played in Nepal early next year. This tournament will bedeciding the final four spots for the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup in England, which is scheduled for June and July.
Neither Zimbabwe nor Namibia has ever played in any format of the women’s World Cup, which makes this qualification a greatachievement for both the teams. They havenow joined Bangladesh, Ireland, Thailand, Nepal and the USA, who have already confirmed their spot in the Global Qualifier. Three more teams will join through other regional qualifiers. Two will be from Europe and another one from the East Asia-Pacific region.
Zimbabwe sealed their place by defeating Uganda in the semi-final of the Africa Region Division One Qualifier in Windhoek in Namibia. Namibia qualified by defeatingTanzania in the second semi-final. The final of the regional competition is on September 6.
The Global Qualifier in Nepal will feature 10 teams. They will be divided into two groups of five. The top three from each group will move into the Super Six stage before the final. Matches will be played from the January 12 to February 2 at the Lower and Upper Mulpani grounds in Kathmandu.
The 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup will also see a historic expansion, as 12 teams are competing instead of 10. New Zealand will be heading towards the event as defending champions. They defeated South Africa in Dubai last year.
