Tania Sachdev, a trailblazing figure in Indian chess, has left an indelible mark on the global chess scene. Born in Delhi, India, Tania’s journey into the world of chess began at the tender age of six, guided by her mother Anju. Little did anyone know that this initial introduction would pave the way for an extraordinary career in the game.

Tania’s prowess became evident early on, claiming the U-12 Indian Championship in 1998. Her meteoric rise continued with victories at the Asian U-14 Girls Championship in 2000 and the Asian U20 Girls Championship in 2002. These accomplishments marked the arrival of a chess prodigy.

In 2005, Tania achieved the title of Woman Grandmaster, becoming the eighth Indian to earn this prestigious distinction. The following years witnessed her dominance in Indian women’s chess as she clinched the Indian Women’s Championship title in 2006 and 2007. The culmination of her efforts was recognised with the prestigious Arjuna Award in 2009, an honour she shares with the legendary GM Viswanathan Anand and a few other chess players.

Beyond her accolades, Tania Sachdev has actively embraced the role of a content creator and chess commentator. Her YouTube channel, boasting over 90,000 subscribers, stands as a testament to her ability to engage and educate chess enthusiasts worldwide while her Instagram profile boasts 162k followers. Tania’s insightful commentary has graced numerous world championship matches and other chess events, solidifying her presence as a respected voice in the chess community.

Tania’s commitment to excellence extends beyond the chessboard. In 2012, she secured an individual bronze medal at the Women’s Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, showcasing her prowess on the international stage. The subsequent years saw her triumphant at the Commonwealth Chess Championship, clinching gold in 2016 and successfully defending her title in 2018 and 2019.

As the eighth Indian chess player to attain the Women Grandmaster title, Tania Sachdev has shattered stereotypes and proven that chess knows no gender. Her journey serves as an inspiration for aspiring players and underscores her resilience in a traditionally male-dominated game.
