
Australian captain Pat Cummins added another feather to his cap with a stunning performance in the third Ashes Test at the Adelaide Oval. The 32-year-old cricketer surpassed Mitchell Johnson to become Australia’s sixth-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket.
In 72 Test matches, Cummins has picked up 315 wickets, taking him past Johnson’s tally of 313. The right-arm pacer achieved the milestone in 134th innings at an average of 21.97. He has claimed 17 four-wicket hauls, 14 five-wicket hauls and two ten-wicket hauls. Shane Warne still tops the list with 708 wickets, followed by Nathan Lyon (567), Glenn McGrath (563), Mitchell Starc (421) and Dennis Lillee (355).
Cummins achieved the record on the fourth day of the third Test against England, where he dismantled England’s batting line-up. In the second innings, he removed key batters, including Ben Duckett (4), Ollie Pope (17) and the world’s number one Test batter Joe Root (39). This was the 13th time Cummins has dismissed Root in Tests. He conceded just 24 runs in 10 overs in the innings. In the first innings, Cummins took three wickets for 69 runs in 17 overs.
Batting first, Australia posted a strong total of 371 in the first innings, with valuable contributions from Alex Carey (106), Usman Khawaja (82) and Mitchell Starc (54). Jofra Archer was the pick of the bowlers for England, claiming five wickets in the innings. In reply, England were bowled out for 286, with Ben Stokes (83), Jofra Archer (51) and Harry Brook (45) among the main contributors.
In the second innings, a magnificent knock of 170 from Travis Head helped Australia post another imposing total of 349. At the end of the fourth day, England still needed 288 runs to win whereas the hosts need four wickets to reclaim the urn.
