Australia’s captain Steve Smith praised his team as they sealed the second Test in Brisbane by eight wickets. He highlighted how hard his team worked for four days and how the pink ball changed the momentum of the game.
After the match, during the post-match presentation, Smith said, “Guys toiled hard, good partnership, got them out and chased 60. Great day. First two days were pretty even, game turned when we were able to extend to get the new ball under lights, that was crucial for us. It can be tricky with the pink ball, it changes really quickly and you have to adapt.”
He also praised Michael Neser and Mitchell Starc for their performances. “What Neser did today was exceptional, with the keeper up to the stumps. Been on a lot of tours, worked hard.”
“You never know what will happen with Stokesy at the crease, good to see them off with only 60 to chase,” Smith said to the official broadcaster.
In the first innings, England posted a decent total of 334 runs, helped by Joe Root who stayed unbeaten on 138. Australia, on the other hand, scored 511 runs in their first innings. Jake Weatherald (72), Marnus Labuschagne (65), Smith (61), and Mitchell Starc (77) all contributed with the bat. That big lead helped Australia stay in control.
In the second innings, England were bowled out for 241 runs, leaving only 65 to chase for Australia. The chase was easy, with Australia scoring 69 for 2 to seal the match.
The third Ashes Test will be played from December 17 in Adelaide, where England will hope for a comeback.
