England head coach Brendon McCullum has made it clear that he wants to continue in his role even after England’s embarrassing Ashes campaign. England suffered a 3-0 loss, with two Tests still left to be played. In the first two Tests, England lost by eight wickets, while in the third Test they fought back but still lost by 82 runs.
McCullum was heavily criticised after the defeat, but he clarified that his focus remains on learning from mistakes and improving the team. The former New Zealand captain stayed positive and said that his future will be decided by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
Speaking to reporters after the Ashes defeat, McCullum said, “I don’t know. It’s not really up to me, is it? I will just keep trying to do the job, try to learn the lessons that I haven’t quite got right here and make adjustments. Those questions are for someone else, not for me,” as quoted by ESPN.
He also mentioned that the role is a “pretty good gig” for him. “It’s good fun. You travel the world with the lads and try to play some exciting cricket and try to achieve some things. For me, it’s a matter of trying to just get the very best out of the people and try to achieve what you can with them,” McCullum explained.
McCullum was first appointed as England’s Test coach before taking charge of the white-ball sides earlier this year. Currently, he is under contract with the ECB until the end of the 2027 ODI World Cup, which also includes the next home Ashes series.
