As we celebrate completing four years in the industry and meet for our company offsite over lunch today, it is time to take stock of the Empowerment Cup, which concluded successfully in Kolkata on Sunday with SSB Siliguri winning the competition. The Empowerment Cup is our attempt to promote women’s football. Sixteen teams from six states participated, and the matches—intensely competitive—were all played in Kolkata. Multiple footballers from yesteryears, both women and men, came to support the effort, and the prize money is something we are truly proud of. Local politicians and party functionaries from across party lines also attended…
As we complete four years, it is essential that we have plans in place for years five and six. 2026 is a massive year for sport, and our endeavour will be to break new ground with our coverage. As always, our quest will be to give our reporters maximum on-ground exposure and opportunity. By doing so, we will ensure that as much sport as possible is covered from the venue, and that our athletes are given maximum visibility. The truth is, every sport in India except senior men’s cricket needs support. Men’s cricket has an established base and the space…
Boria Majumdar RevSportz completes four years today. It still feels like the other day when, sitting in a Dubai hotel, I decided to quit the consultancy I had done for nine years and start RevSportz. A disruption was much needed, and I was determined to try and make a change. In these four years, one thing I can safely say is that we have indeed been able to disrupt—and make a difference. None of this would have been possible without the team we now have. Yes, we have our disagreements, arguments, and differences of opinion. Meltdowns too—Shamik Chakrabarty and Sarvanash…
By Boria Majumdar Performance. That’s the only index in sport. Rohit scored 200-plus runs in the three-match ODI series in Australia. Virat scored a magical hundred in Ranchi. As long as they score, and score like this, where is the need for any talk on whether they will find a place in the team? Of course they will, and it is a given. If a batter scores runs at a decent strike rate, all debate is put to rest and the matter is closed. While it isn’t necessary to comment on the 2027 World Cup just yet, suffice it to…
It was a few days into the Paris Olympics, and Sharmistha and I had been invited to the opening of the India House. It was a lovely occasion, with some wonderful Indian food as an added attraction. We were impressed with the attention to detail, and that’s where we met Shri Mukesh Ambani. Mukesh bhai was kind enough to tell Sharmistha that he had followed my work for a long time, and felt RevSportz was a welcome addition to the Indian sports ecosystem. These were serious words of encouragement, and we began speaking about Indian Olympic sport. Mukesh bhai asked…
Boria Majumdar It was sometime in mid-2022, and I was grappling with the ban imposed on me. Partha Nandy, scion of Lalbaba Rice, had come to Kolkata from Burdwan for a day of business meetings. He called and asked if I wanted to meet up and discuss a few things. We decided to have lunch at ITC and talk. I had little idea what he had in mind and went to the meeting with very little hope of any association. Partha Babu, as I refer to him, got straight to the point. “I know you are going through a rough…
Boria Majumdar A lot of fan anger is directed at Gautam Gambhir at the moment. Many have called for his head, singling him out as the one responsible for the disastrous 2-0 series loss against South Africa. While fan anger is understandable, much of it is raw emotion rather than reason. Gambhir is indeed accountable, as he himself admitted in the press conference. But is he alone the root of all evil, and will things improve simply by removing him? The answer is no. Much like Gambhir, the batters are equally – if not more – accountable. The bowlers too need…
As RevSportz completes four years, it is important that we underline a few key points about our fraternity. First and foremost, we are a divided lot – and often jealous of each other. Despite being a very small fraternity, there are deep divisions, and perhaps that is why there is never a collective voice. The truth is, this does not help. When someone needs support, he or she is often alone. Given our fragmented nature, there is no proper organisation or body to step up and do something. That is what we want to address in our fifth year…
Gautam Gambhir said in the post-match press conference that we need to prioritise Test cricket. Yes, we do. But my question is: how? How do we prioritise Test cricket in an age where white-ball cricket has achieved commercial success of humongous proportions? Let’s be blunt. A Cheteshwar Pujara—who played Test cricket with distinction—never got even a half-decent IPL contract. Any white-ball player who can hit big sixes will earn in one season of the IPL what Pujara earned over an entire year, and often far more. They get more endorsements than Ajinkya Rahane or Pujara ever did. So why should…
Boria Majumdar It was 10:05 am and Simon Harmer’s loopy off-spin hit high on Rishabh Pant’s bat and travelled slowly to Aiden Markram for an easy catch. India were 58-5, and it was evident that another abject surrender was on the cards. These batters can’t play spin — that’s the bottom line. Almost every ball looked like it could fetch a wicket, and every batter looked tentative and clueless. Ravindra Jadeja was an exception. The art of the grind is a rare and disappearing quality, and not a single batter seems capable of grafting. Soul-searching is a must. Yes, there…
