The 2nd edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) holds a lot of promise for the development of women’s cricket in India. With the firepower of the BCCI behind the steering wheel, the WPL has been set up for success. Now that the tournament is being held for the second time, it’s gratifying to look back on the journey so far.

The tournament that now stands on pillars of success didn’t always have such a foundation. After much deliberation among board members and several years of exhibition matches, the BCCI finally announced the launch of the WPL in 2022, to bring hope and faith back into the women’s cricket circuit in India. It is a tournament that ultimately aims to bridge the gap between the competitive levels of international and domestic cricket in India. This has been a longstanding issue troubling India’s women cricketers.

Inspired by the Indian Premier League (IPL) that revolutionised men’s cricket in India, the WPL has catalysed the evolution of Indian women’s cricket. Charting new territory and scripting history. According to Jio Cinema, the official broadcasters, WPL 2023 garnered ground-breaking viewership, marking the highest in any women’s event globally. Over 10 million viewers tuned in to watch the final between Delhi Capitals and Harmanpreet Kaur’s Mumbai Indians, who were crowned the champions.

Another breakthrough event that will go down in history was the 2024 WPL Auction, where two young, uncapped players crossed the 1 crore mark. Vrinda Dinesh and Kashvee Gautam fetched INR 1.3 crores and 2 crores respectively. It marked a pivotal moment in women’s cricket in India where young players and their parents alike, watching the auction from home, would no longer think of cricket as a financially unstable career.

Tonight, the stage is set in Bangalore for either Harmanpreet to carry forward the momentum from last year or for Meg Lanning to turn the tables. Crowds are expected to turn up in large numbers as the tickets have been selling out fast. With the King of Bollywood, Shahrukh Khan, set to grace the opening ceremony with a charming performance, those coming through the turnstiles are all set for a spectacle like never before.
