Jaker Ali has been left out of Bangladesh’s 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup, which begins next month. Taskin Ahmed has earned a recall after missing the last series, and the side will be led by Litton Das. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed Saif Hassan as the team’s vice-captain.
Saif’s appointment as vice-captain is a testament to his rise with the bat in white-ball cricket. His stocks have risen since the Asia Cup last year.
Jaker, who led Bangladesh in the absence of Litton last year, has been dropped from the side for the first time since March 2024. The wicketkeeper-batter has been out of form and has also lost his place in Bangladesh’s teams in the other formats. There are no places in the squad for Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mohammad Naim or Mahidul Islam Ankon.
In the absence of Jaker, Nurul Hasan and Shamim Hossain will have to shoulder the responsibility in the lower middle order.
Taskin missed the recent home series against Ireland due to prior commitments with Sharjah Warriorz in the ILT20. The experienced right-arm pacer will spearhead the bowling attack, which includes the likes of Mustafizur Rahman, Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Shoriful Islam.
Bangladesh are scheduled to play their group matches in India, with the first three in Kolkata and the final one in Mumbai. However, the BCB is expected to push for the matches to be shifted to Sri Lanka after Mustafizur was released by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) following instructions from the BCCI.
