Jacob Bethell expressed his delight after hitting his maiden Test hundred against Australia in the final Test of the ongoing Ashes series 2025/26 at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
Speaking after the end of Day 4 in the post-match press conference, Bethell said:
“It has not sunk it yet, and I have not had the time to reflect on it. It was nice to do it in front of my family”
Bethell walked in to bat after England lost Zak Crawley very early in the second innings. The left-handed batter took control and stitched an 81-run partnership with Ben Duckett to steady the innings. He then added another crucial 101-run stand with Harry Brook, which provided much-needed stability to England’s batting.
The 22-year-old played a composed and sensible knock throughout the day. At stumps on Day 4, Bethell remained unbeaten on 142 runs off 232 balls, including 15 fours, as England stretched their lead to 119 runs over Australia.
Reflecting on his innings, Bethell admitted that facing spin made him feel more comfortable compared to Australia’s seam attack, particularly Scott Boland.
“I was quite happy when they brought Spin on rather than Boland. I was a bit nervous around him. Boland just lands it there, and he’s pretty hard to score off, especially when they bring the field up. So when they brought the spinner on, I was pretty comfortable taking him over the top. But there were a few nerves there. Clearly, they were trying to get me to have a nervous feel outside off-stump when I was close to a hundred. But I was pretty switched on to that. I did not want to fall into that trap. Starcy bowling a couple bouncers as well (was) pretty canny. But I managed to not fall for any of them,” Bethell said.
