England great Geoffrey Boycott has suggested replacing Brendon McCullum as England head coach following their Ashes defeat in Australia.
Writing for The Telegraph, Boycott said: “I just think Brendon has taken us as far as he can and we need someone else to take England to the next level.”
Under McCullum’s coaching, England were comprehensively beaten 4-1 in the recently concluded Ashes series 2025/26. There were criticisms early in the series regarding England’s lack of preparation ahead of a major assignment like the Ashes. As the series progressed, several experts grew frustrated with England’s performances, with some even calling for changes to both the captain and the coach.
England also endured a difficult home Test series against India. They led the series 2-1 and were in a strong position in the fourth Test before India staged a remarkable comeback over the final two days to force a draw. In the final Test at The Oval, England needed fewer than 40 runs to win on the last day but failed to chase the target, allowing India to level the series 2-2.
Boycott added: “I like Brendon. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like him and he has been a breath of fresh air for England cricket which has been exciting and invigorating. But Brendon is a gambler who thinks he is always going to win his money back. That’s how casinos always win in the end. How many hopefuls start well but finish in tears? The reason is they don’t know when to stop or change their routine.”
