Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed his admiration for teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi following his remarkable run of performances across domestic and age-group cricket.
Ashwin highlighted Vaibhav’s recent scores and took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to praise the young batter’s extraordinary consistency. He wrote: “171(95), 50(26), 190(84), 68(24), 108*(61), 46(25) & 127(74) today. These are just some of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s scores in the last 30 days across domestic & U19 cricket. Enna thambi, indha adi podhuma, illa innum konjam venuma? ( what’s all this brother? Is this sample enough or are you going to raise the bar further) You can’t explain in words what this kid is doing at 14.”
Vaibhav’s numbers in recent weeks underline why he is being talked about as one of the brightest young talents in Indian cricket. In the recently concluded U19 Youth ODI series between India and South Africa, the left-hander finished as the highest run-getter. He scored 206 runs from three matches at an impressive average of 68.66, which included a century and a fifty. He was even the captain of the side as India whitewashed the Proteas, 3-0.
The year 2025 proved to be a breakthrough phase for Vaibhav. He made his debut in the Indian Premier League and featured in seven matches for Rajasthan Royals (RR). During the season, he scored 252 runs, which included one century and one fifty, making an immediate impact at the highest level.
His performances were equally dominant in youth ODIs. Across 12 matches, Vaibhav amassed 690 runs at an average of 57.50. Ashwin believes the coming months will be crucial in shaping Vaibhav’s career. He pointed out that the young batter is entering a phase that will test his temperament and character.
“With the U19 World Cup round the corner where he’s expected to be the showstopper, followed immediately by the leap to the IPL for his first full season as an opener stepping into the big shoes of Sanju, the next four months of #VaibhavWatch is going to be exciting, telling us everything about his temperament, hunger & character.”
