India batter Tilak Varma has been ruled out of the first three T20Is against New Zealand, and his participation in the final two matches of the five-match series will be determined in due course, the BCCI said in a release on January 8. No replacement has been named by the selectors.

Tilak underwent surgery for testicular torsion in Rajkot on Wednesday (January 7) after reportedly experiencing abdominal issues.

Following a successful surgical procedure, the 23-year-old batter was discharged from hospital on Thursday morning and is scheduled to fly back to Hyderabad on Friday. As per details shared by the BCCI, Tilak is currently stable and progressing well.

Once his wound has healed satisfactorily, Tilak will return to the field and begin training in order to gradually resume skill-based activities.

Having last played in the T20I series against South Africa in December, Tilak went on to lead Hyderabad in two 50-over matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The left-hander started the new year on a high, scoring 109 against Chandigarh on January 3, before making 34 against Bengal in the following game.

Part of India’s T20 World Cup squad, Tilak scored 567 runs in 18 innings last year at an average of 47.25 and a strike rate of 129.15.

The first three T20Is between India and New Zealand will be played on January 21, 23 and 25 respectively.

Tilak’s availability for the final two T20Is, to be played on January 28 and 31 in Vizag and Trivandrum respectively, will be assessed by the medical team based on his progress in the meantime.
