Australia’s star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has signed another two-year deal with Melbourne on January 27, just hours before the Big Bash League’s contracting embargo came into effect.
In an official statement, Maxwell expressed his passion for the team and said, “The Melbourne Stars have been a massive part of my cricket career and I’m really passionate about this team having success.”
He added, “I think this current group is building towards something special and I’m confident we’re in a place to contend for the title in the next two seasons.”
Maxwell is the third-highest run-scorer in the history of the BBL, and his new contract clarifies that he will play beyond the age of 39. Even though the Stars are the only team to have not won a title yet, they reached the Knockout stage this season but could not progress further.
This season, Maxwell struggled in the BBL and only managed to score 76 runs in eight innings and picked just two wickets. Despite this, the Stars have backed him strongly, and he even received an offer from the Sydney Thunder to join their squad.
Stars’ performance manager Clint McKay praised Maxwell’s commitment to the team and said, “Glenn has obviously been one of the best T20 players in the world for a long period of time and his commitment to the Stars is really valuable to us.”
Campbell Kellaway’s contract was also extended by two years. He was consistent and added 172 runs this season.
Talking about Campbell’s signing, McKay said, “Signing Campbell was just as important as he adds some great stability to our top order. He proved himself at the level this season and I’ve got no doubt he will make a lot of runs for us for many years to come.”
