The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) vice-president Rajiv Shukla has assured that weather patterns will be taken into account before finalising schedules in the future. His remarks came after the fourth T20I between India and South Africa was called off without a ball being bowled due to dense smog.
A match being abandoned because of dense smog is a rare sight on the cricket field. The umpires came out for inspection six times, each time hoping that the atmospheric conditions would improve. However, that did not happen and the match was eventually cancelled.
With the match being called off, many fans present at the stadium lashed out at the board.
Shukla, who was present at the Ekana Cricket Stadium, acknowledged the disappointment of the fans.
“The Lucknow T20I was cancelled, and everyone is disappointed,” he said while speaking to India Today. “All preparations were in place, everything was ready, and inspections were carried out right until the last moment. After that, the match was called off due to fog.”
He also admitted that the winter season poses consistent challenges in hosting matches in the northern region of the country and said that this reality must be taken into account while preparing future calendars.
“Fog is a very big problem from 15 December to 15 January. So I feel that while rescheduling in the future, this aspect will also have to be kept in mind,” he added.
The fifth and final T20I in Ahmedabad, scheduled to be played on Friday, will be the series decider, with India leading 2–1.
