It was the day of the Empowerment Cup press conference at the Calcutta Sports Journalists’ Club. The programme had not yet started when Suven Raha, President of the club, called me aside, saying he wanted to have a word.

He has always been a close friend and someone who tries to make a difference. He told me that they now run an Under-13 girls’ football clinic under the aegis of the club and had roped in Shanti Mallick as coach. They have been doing this for two years and asked if I could consider giving the young footballers a set of kits each from Revsportz.

The moment he said it, I decided I would. Revsportz would. That’s the point. These are small gestures that can go a long way toward making a difference. At the press conference itself, I announced that on the day of the Empowerment Cup final, 25 full sets of football kits would be handed over to Suven and Shanti for the young players.

Sharmistha Gooptu, COO and co-founder, handed them over on Sunday, and we are glad the kids will now use them. We would have been happier had they come to the final, but we realise it’s not always easy for the kids to travel.

The point of this piece is not self-promotion. The point is to emphasise that each one of us has a job to do – to give back to the profession, to add to the collective. I have to say there are newspapers that reported the football final and also the token support. Yet, they did not mention Revsportz. It doesn’t really matter to me what they do. The truth is that such small things impact the collective. They ensure that we remain a divided fraternity. By not acknowledging Revsportz, you are actually impacting your own profession – telling the world that we don’t really back each other.

As far as Revsportz is concerned, we will continue to support the kids going forward as well. We want to make this an annual initiative and get them to play the tournament when they are ready. The quest is to give back to sport and make a difference. And we will keep doing our bit.

In 2026, Revsportz reporters will cover 22 events on the ground. They will travel the world and report on sport, growing in the process. But that doesn’t mean we will ignore the grassroots or our own people. Suven is one of our own and needed to be supported. Going forward, the support will be greater. That’s the quest.

For us in sports journalism, it is time we realise that the profession is in crisis. There are layoffs everywhere. Amid all this, Revsportz is like a breath of fresh air – by journalists and for journalists. We should all join hands, act as a collective, and back each other up. Differences and disagreements haven’t helped the profession and will not do so going forward. We all need to see the writing on the wall and leave individual egos aside to work as a whole. The truth is, that’s our only real chance to make a difference.
