Former India captain Sourav Ganguly revealed why he took up the role of head coach of Pretoria Capitals for the ongoing fourth season of the SA20, saying that franchise co-owner Parth Jindal asked him to do so.
Last August, Ganguly replaced Jonathan Trott as head coach of Pretoria Capitals, having already served as Director of Cricket for JSW Sports, the parent company of the franchise, for more than a year.
Having served in different roles during his career, from cricketer to administrator to coach, Ganguly had never previously taken up a head coach’s role. It was Parth Jindal who convinced him to accept the job.
“For the first time ever in my life, I am a head coach, and I am enjoying it,” Ganguly said during an interaction with a select group of media personnel. “I am very close to Parth (Jindal), so he asked me to do this, and I agreed.”
New to the role, Ganguly emphasised that he is still learning the art of coaching despite being associated with the game for more than two decades.
“I am still learning. I may have played and captained numerous matches, but this is different. I am coaching, and I am doing this to learn and understand,” said Ganguly.
Under Ganguly’s guidance, Pretoria Capitals have performed reasonably well so far in the six-team tournament, collecting 15 points from seven matches. The Centurion-based franchise will be aiming to qualify for the play-offs after missing out in the previous two seasons.
