Former team India pacer and the current Karnataka State Cricket Association president, Venkatesh Prasad praised Rohit Sharma for his incredible achievements after being conferred with the Padma Shri.
While joining virtually at a special event, celebrating ‘The Rise of the Hitman’ by author R. Kaushik, Venkatesh said: “Being conferred with the Padma Shri is a huge achievement and Rohit Sharma fully deserves it. Having played for so many years across formats and created an extraordinary body of work, he stands out as the only Indian player to have won two T20 World Cups.” The event held at the KSCA, hosted by Jain Sports.
Rohit and Harmanpreet Kaur were conferred with the Padma Shri award on Sunday. Under Rohit’s leadership, India reached three ICC trophy finals, winning two. While India had a dream run in the 2023 ICC World Cup, they narrowly missed out in the final.
However, the right-hander led India to their second T20 World Cup title in 2024 and also captained the team to Champions Trophy glory in 2025. At 38, he remains the only Indian cricketer to win two T20 World Cups.
Venkatesh, who coached Rohit in the Under-19 team, also said that he understood the Mumbai batter’s talent much before he rose to prominence in international cricket.
“I have been seeing Rohit from the time he was 16 or 17 when he played for the India Under-19 team. Even then, you could see the sheer talent and potential. What struck me from the very beginning was how much time he had to play his shots. You can easily compare Rohit Sharma with any of the greats that India has produced. That is the quality of batter we are talking about.”
