Ajinkya Rahane criticised Team India’s ODI skipper ShubmanGill over his on-field decisions after their defeat against New Zealand in the series-decider ODI in Indore on January 18. Rahane felt that India failed to use their main spinners at the right time as New Zealand posted a huge total of 338.
Speaking on Cricbuzz, Rahane clearly highlighted where India went wrong. “Personally, I think Shubman missed a trick by bowling only three overs of Kuldeep in the middle overs, and then he was waiting till the 37th-38th over. Even Jadejabeing held back till the 30th over, those are the guys who can get you the wickets. That is where India went slightly wrong,” he said.
Daryl Mitchell (137) and Glenn Phillips (106) put on a massive 219-run partnership as they batted for nearly 30 overs. Their stand completely shifted the momentum and helped New Zealand secure the series 2-1.
Former India pacer Zaheer Khan also supported Rahane’sview and said, “More than Kuldeep, it is Ravindra Jadeja’sinclusion in the bowling attack very late that was the problem. Maybe the thought was to give Nitish Reddy a bit more game time and overs under his belt in a match situation, but because of that, you get a bit hamstrung with your options.”
Kuldeep Yadav picked up one wicket in six overs and conceded 48 runs, while Jadeja ended with an economy rate of 6.83 after conceding 41 runs in six overs. Virat Kohli tried to save India by hammering his 85th international century, but India eventually fell short by 41 runs.
