In-form Steve Smith has been left out as Australia named a 17-member squad for the Pakistan tour, which includes uncapped players such as Mahli Beardman and Jack Edwards. Senior players including Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Tim David, Glenn Maxwell and Nathan Ellis have been rested for the three-match series, which will be played in Lahore.
Smith has scored a hundred and a fifty in his last two innings in the BBL while opening the batting for the Sydney Sixers. Despite being in red-hot form, the former Australian captain has been left out once again. Captain Mitchell Marsh, Travis Head and Josh Inglis are likely to form Australia’s top order.
The World Cup-bound players selected for the upcoming T20Is against Pakistan will join the squad in Sri Lanka, where Australia will play their World Cup matches.
“The series is a great opportunity for those on the brink of selection and some young players we rate highly to gain valuable experience with the World Cup group in Pakistan,” Chair of Selectors George Bailey said.
“Some are already experienced international players, along with Mahli Beardman, who has been with the group a number of times, and Jack Edwards, who joined for the last one-day match against India in Sydney last year.”
Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium will host all three T20Is, starting with the first on January 29, followed by the remaining two on January 31 and February 1.
