India pacer Arshdeep Singh is focused on his preparations and on executing his plans to perfection whenever he gets a chance, rather than thinking about selection.
The left-arm pacer picked up a solitary wicket in the first T20I against New Zealand, which was played in Nagpur. It was a match in which Jasprit Bumrah went wicketless.
In 2025, Arshdeep featured in 13 of India’s 21 T20Is and was notably benched, with Bumrah being picked as the first-choice pacer in a spin-heavy line-up.
When asked whether he has been affected by the constant chopping and changing since Gautam Gambhir became head coach, Arshdeep responded, “Jaise main team se in and out hota hoon uska advantage bhi hai. Mera ball bhi in and out jaata hai” (Being in and out of the team has its own set of advantages. Just as I go in and out of the team, my ball is also coming in and going out). “So I am enjoying that.”
The 26-year-old is not gutted by the limited opportunities he gets; instead, he focuses on his preparation.
“My job is to stay prepared and perform whenever the team needs me to bowl in any format, with either the new or the old ball. My aim is to enjoy the journey, remain in the present, and focus on what I can control. What is beyond my control (selection), I shouldn’t worry about,” he said.
With 111 wickets to his name in 73 T20Is, Arshdeep remains India’s most prolific wicket-taker in the shortest version of the game. Four more T20Is remain before India play their first T20 World Cup match.
