Former India wicketkeeper-batter Deep Dasgupta said that India’s T20I vice-captain Shubman Gill should play the anchor role that Virat Kohli played for many years.
Speaking to PTI Videos, Dasgupta said that Gill should be the fulcrum around which the hard-hitters can play.
“For me, Shubman’s role is very different because, if you see, most of the other players are stroke players. So it is a kind of role that Virat played so well for so many years — holding one end while everyone else played around him. I see Shubman in that role that Virat played. He is that fulcrum around whom everyone plays. Not necessarily with a high strike rate like others, but more consistent than the rest. That is the role I see for him.”
Gill is not known to be a hard-hitter. The 25-year-old has played 36 T20Is for India, scoring 869 runs at an average of 28.03 and a strike rate of 138.59.
However, the form of Gill and captain Suryakumar Yadav is a big area of concern for Team India, as both batters are yet to score a fifty in 2025.
Dasgupta spoke on the issue and said: “I don’t think it will be bothering them, but ideally you would want them (Gill and Surya) to start firing again. If you want them to be fearless, that will come at a price — and that price is consistency. That is something you have to be mindful of. There will be concern, and we would ideally want Surya and everyone to be in form. Unfortunately, we don’t have many matches before the World Cup. But they are good enough, and hopefully it’s just a matter of time.”
