India’s Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill has shared details of his recovery journey after being sidelined for weeks due to a painful neck injury sustained during the first Test against South Africa on November 15.

In a video shared by the BCCI, Gill spoke about his injury lay-off and road to recovery ahead of the start of the T20I series against the Proteas.

“I’m feeling much better. From the day I came here until today, I’ve had quite a few skill sessions and some training sessions, so I feel much, much better now,” Gill told BCCI Tv. “From recovery to training, I think for an athlete it can’t get any better — it’s a paradise for any athlete.”

Sharing what stood out for him, Gill said, “You come here wanting to get physically better, you want to get mentally better. I mean, you can’t ask for better facilities. You know, you can go to the oxygen chamber, there’s a cryo room… there are so many machines that I don’t even know how to use. That itself tells you how big the set-up is.”

The vice-captain of the T20I team also spoke about how special the National Cricket Academy felt during his younger days. “Growing up, playing Under-14 and Under-16, it used to be a thing among us… someone who had been to the NCA and come back — we used to be in awe.”

Talking about self-growth, he added, “When you come here, you know you are kind of the cream of the crop… but how willing you are to work on yourself is what’s going to take you up that notch.”

Gill was ruled out of the second Test against South Africa after sustaining his neck injury at Eden Gardens. He also missed the three-match ODI series.

Having recovered from the injury, the right-handed batter is likely to play the first T20I against South Africa in Cuttack, scheduled for Tuesday, December 9.
