South Africa great AB de Villiers supported India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir’s view of a floating batting order in ODIs except for the openers.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, De Villiers said: “I do agree with him to a certain extent. I’ve always enjoyed a floating batting lineup in ODIs. But it’s a fine line because you can’t really play around too much with the players’ roles. It’s the top three, four to six, and then your tailenders who can hold the bat. It’s almost like three segments, and you can really be creative with that. Play with right- and left-hand combinations and certain situations of the game.”
India have tried many experiments with the batting order after Gambhir became the coach. For example, in the recently finished ODI series against South Africa, stand-in captain KL Rahul was given a new role.
De Villiers also praised India’s performance in T20Is, and the former South African batter believes that it is because of the depth of the team.
“It has been incredible, especially for a T20 format. It’s the most volatile format of the three, and to have that kind of consistency tells you there must be something going on that’s heading in the right direction. I think it’s got to do with the depth of Indian cricket,” he added.
India have won 13 of the last 15 T20I series they have played. In the recently finished series against Australia, India made a great comeback after being defeated in the first match to win the series 2-1.
