India defeated South Africa by 17 runs in a close contest in Ranchi in the first ODI of the three-match series. After the match, India’s stand-in ODI skipper, KL Rahul praised veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for their brilliant batting display.

“It’s always fun to watch them (Kohli and Rohit) play like that, play with that freedom, that’s what they’ve done throughout their careers. I’ve seen this for a long time. For me it’s a lot more fun to have them around in the dressing room,” said Rahul.

After the early departure of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit and Kohli stitched a partnership of 136 runs off just 109 balls that not only gave the innings solidity but also set the base for a big total. Rohit was dismissed after scoring 57 off 51 balls, while Kohli went on to hit his 52nd ton in ODI cricket.

Rahul also praised Harshit Rana, who gave India their first two breakthroughs in his first over. Rana finished with figures of 3/65 in his 10 overs.

“Harshit has done really well. Knew he was special the moment he came in the dressing room. He’s someone the team has been looking for. Still someone who is developing but has a lot of potential,” he added.

The second ODI between India and South Africa is on December 3 in Raipur.
