India women’s team captain Harmanpreet Kaur added another major milestone to her career on Friday, December 26. She broke a long-standing record held by Australia great Meg Lanning. After India defeated Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the third T20I at Thiruvananthapuram, Harmanpreet became the most successful captain in women’s T20I history.
Harmanpreet now has 77 wins from 130 T20Is as captain, taking her past Lanning, who registered 76 victories in 100 matches for Australia. Harmanpreet also holds the record for leading a team in the most women’s T20Is. England captains Heather Knight (71 wins in 96 matches) and Charlotte Edwards (68 wins in 93 matches) are behind her on this list.
Earlier this year, Harmanpreet led India to their maiden women’s ODI World Cup title by defeating South Africa in the final on November 2, becoming the first Indian captain to achieve this feat.
In the same match, Deepti Sharma also created history by becoming the first cricketer to score 1,000 runs and take 150 wickets in women’s T20Is. Renuka Singh Thakur picked up a four-wicket haul to restrict Sri Lanka to 112/7. In reply, Shafali Verma’s unbeaten 79 helped India chase the target in just 13.2 overs, sealing a 3-0 lead in the series.
During the post-match presentation, Harmanpreet reflected on India’s victory and said,
“It was a great series for all of us. That’s what we discussed when we got together after the World Cup: we have to raise our standard.”
The fourth T20I between India and Sri Lanka will be played on Sunday, December 28, at Thiruvananthapuram.
