Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh believes that India should be patient with head coach Gautam Gambhir and that he should be given more time.
Speaking to ANI, Harbhajan said that it is not easy to take charge of a team like India.
“It is not that easy to become a coach of India. To be a coach, you have to travel with the team for a whole year and keep yourself involved in the game. You have to be more engaged because there are multiple team selections, and you also need to focus on match results.”
After India were whitewashed by South Africa at home, some experts and fans called for Gambhir to be removed from the head coach’s role. It was India’s second home whitewash within a year, after New Zealand defeated them 3-0 in 2024. Some experts also suggested that India should have different coaches for different formats, even though Gambhir has a strong record in white-ball cricket. Under his coaching, India won the ICC Champions Trophy and the Asia Cup.
However, Harbhajan feels there is no need to take such a step at this stage.
“In India, it is our tradition that if the team plays well, everyone is quiet, but as soon as the team plays poorly, we get on top of the coach. Everyone needs to be patient. If you feel you need to split the coaching, such as adopting a policy of one white ball and one red ball, then there is no need to do so for now,” he added.
The next major assignment for Gambhir is the upcoming T20 World Cup, which will be held in India and Sri Lanka. The Men in Blue will be looking to defend the title they won in the 2024 edition.
