The IPL 2026 mini-auction had its most dramatic moments when Cameron Green became the focus of a bidding war. Starting at a base price of ₹2 crore, the Australian all-rounder was eventually purchased by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for ₹25.20 crore. This made him the most expensive overseas player in IPL history.
The initial bidding was between KKR and Rajasthan Royals (RR), with RR’s strong participation raising eyebrows as their purse was limited to ₹16.05 crore. As the price rose, KKR which had the largest budget, stepped in decisively, forcing RR to withdraw at ₹13.60 crore.

Just when KKR seemed ready to secure Green, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) entered the bidding at ₹13.80 crore. There was a fierce tug of war as both had the resources and strategies in place to keep them motivated. This competition pushed the price past ₹18 crore and continued until KKR finally secured Green for what was a record price for an overseas player. At the time, KKR had ₹64.30 crore available, while CSK had ₹43.40 crore.
KKR’s strong interest in Green was premised on filling the gap of a high-impact pace-bowling all-rounder like Andre Russell. Green fits this role well, providing explosive top or middle-order batting and the ability to bowl fast-medium overs. His flexibility to bat anywhere from number three to six adds balance to KKR’s playing XI.
However, despite the record bid, BCCI mini-auction rules limit the salary of overseas players to ₹18 crore. While KKR will be charged the full ₹25.20 crore from their budget, Green will officially earn ₹18 crore for the season. The leftover ₹7.20 crore will go into the BCCI Welfare Fund.
