Indian Premier League chairman Arun Singh Dhumal has clearly dismissed the possibility of Indian players featuring in overseas T20 leagues. He said there is no chance in the near future, highlighting that workload management remains the biggest concern. Dhumal stressed that allowing active Indian cricketers to play abroad could put extra pressure on players and hurt the national team.
Explaining his point, Dhumal highlighted the heavy schedule of Indian players. “You look at the workload our players have. The BCCI has made a rule for the international players that they must play domestic cricket as well,” Dhumal told journalist Vimal Kumar.
Dhumal further explained how busy Indian cricketers are. “They have to play the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy as well. When there is so much cricket in India, and there are so many takers and fans in the country, I don’t think there can be the opportunity (to play in overseas leagues),” he said.
The IPL chairman also made it clear that star players have no chance of playing in overseas leagues. “At the moment, there is no chance for the big players. How can they go? Some players are even playing in three formats. Workload management!” Dhumal said.
He added, “Some bowlers, we have to give them rest after two Tests, we have to rest them in ODIs and T20Is. Now if you tell them to go abroad and play leagues, I think that would hurt the national team too.”
The BCCI has a strict rule for Indian players which they have to follow, stating that they cannot participate in any overseas league before their retirement.
