Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar has strongly criticised the BCCI and the national selectors for repeatedly leaving Yashasvi Jaiswal out of India’s white-ball teams. Vengsarkar believes that despite consistent performances across formats, the young opener has been sidelined without any clear explanation.
“It is unfortunate that Yashasvi is being left out time and again for no fault of his. He has been in tremendous form across all formats of the game and I don’t know what else he has to do to get into the team,” Vengsarkar told PTI.
Vengsarkar stressed that players who can change the course of a game should never be ignored.
“Nobody should leave a match winner out of the team,” he said in his fortnightly assessment, underlining that impact players like Jaiswal deserve sustained backing and clarity from the team management.
The former chief selector further highlighted how such decisions can affect a player mentally.
According to Vengsarkar, confidence is a key element in modern cricket, and it comes only when a player feels trusted by those in charge. “You are bound to lose confidence if you are made to feel that you are not required in one format. I mean it will affect his confidence and this game is all about confidence. And confidence comes when you have performances backed by runs,” he added.
Vengsarkar also made it clear that he would not have taken the same route had he been in charge of selection decisions.
“I wouldn’t have told him anything because I wouldn’t have dropped him in the first place,” he said, reiterating his belief that Jaiswal is a player who should be an automatic choice in the white-ball setup.
Jaiswal last featured in a T20I for India in 2024 against Sri Lanka in Pallekele. Since then, he was left out of the 2024 T20 World Cup squad and was also omitted from the Champions Trophy squad in 2025, decisions that have raised questions among former players and fans alike.
