Oman Cricket (OC) on Tuesday, December 30, announced a 15-member squad, with seasoned opener Jatinder Singh leading the team in what will be the nation’s fourth appearance at the tournament.
Wicketkeeper-batter Vinayak Shukla has been named vice-captain of the side.
The squad sees several changes from the side that played in the Asia Cup earlier this year. Aamir Kaleem, Sufyan Yousuf, Aryan Bisht, Zikria Islam and Mohammed Imran have been left out, while all-rounders Wasim Ali, Karan Sonavale and Jay Odedra have earned recalls. Pacers Shafiq Jan and Jiten Ramanandi have also been included to add depth to the pace attack.
Speaking on the make-up of the squad, head coach Duleep Mendis said:
“We have a good combination and mix of players… it is time for Oman to make their presence felt, as mere participation is not enough. It is time for us to get some positive results.”
OC Secretary and Chef-de-Mission Madhu Jesrani also acknowledged the team’s hard work, saying:
“This will be our fourth time participating in the World Cup, and it is a matter of great pride and honour. The boys have worked extremely hard and have performed well during qualification. We are proud of the way they have represented Oman.”
The World Cup will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8 and will feature 20 teams. Oman have been placed in Group B alongside Australia, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Ireland. They will begin their campaign against Zimbabwe on February 9 in Colombo.
