Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan praised India’s Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill for his immense talent and believes that responsibility will make him a better cricketer.
Speaking on Star Sports, Pathan said that the right-handed batter will grow into a better cricketer with experience.
“He (Gill) has a lot of talent. There will always be comparisons,” he said. “Virat was compared with Sachin, and now Gill is being compared to Virat, who has scored 25,000–30,000 runs. I think he is fully capable of it. He has a fine range of shots. The more responsibility and challenges he gets, the more he will grow as a cricketer. I have seen that he is always ready for cricket.”
Gill emerged as a force in Indian cricket in 2025. When Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket during the IPL, Gill was appointed captain of the Test team ahead of the high-profile Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy in England. Many experts questioned the selectors’ decision. However, the 26-year-old gave a fitting reply to his critics both with the bat and through his leadership. He finished as the highest run-scorer of the series, amassing 754 runs in 10 innings at an average of 75.40. India fought back strongly to level the series 2–2. In the subsequent Test series against the West Indies, India won 2–0. However, the ‘Men in Blue’ lost the ODI series against Australia 2–1.
Gill was brought back into the T20I side after a year and was appointed vice-captain. However, he was dropped from the T20 World Cup 2026 squad due to a string of low scores with the bat. The Punjab-based cricketer will be seen in action when India take on New Zealand in the three-match ODI series starting on January 11.
