Rohit Sharma’s participation in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy is all but confirmed. It is learnt that the former India captain will play a few matches for Mumbai in the domestic 50-over tournament, starting on December 24.
According to an insider, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is yet to receive an official confirmation from Rohit with regards to him playing the Vijay Hazare Trophy. But the 38-year-old firmly remains in the association’s scheme of things. Mumbai are currently playing the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy where their last Super League match is on December 16. If they qualify for the final, then that is on December 18. The squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy will be picked after the ongoing T20 tournament.
“The squad will be picked on a match-to-match basis and we expect Rohit to play a few games, although we haven’t received any confirmation from him yet,” a functionary told RevSportz. “But there’s time. The squad is likely to be picked next week, after the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. There are ODIs against New Zealand next month as well, so it will depend on his availability.”
India’s opening fixture in the three-match ODI series against New Zealand is on January 11. It needs to be seen when the squad assembles in Vadodara for the ODIs. Mumbai, meanwhile, would be playing their Vijay Hazare Trophy game against Himachal Pradesh on January 6 followed by the match against Punjab on January 8. Mumbai’s opening game is against Sikkim on December 24.
Rohit might have to pick and choose.
