Veteran South Africa spinner Keshav Maharaj has been appointed captain of the Pretoria Capitals for the upcoming SA20 season, the franchise confirmed on Friday (December 12).

Having led the Durban Super Giants last season, Maharaj replaces Rilee Rossouw, who will play for the Joburg Super Kings, as skipper of the Capitals. In the auction that took place earlier this year, the 35-year-old was one of the Capitals’ major signings. Dewald Brevis was the franchise’s most expensive acquisition, brought in for R16.5 million — half of their total purse of R32.5 million.

On Maharaj’s appointment as captain, the Capitals said in a statement: “Maharaj brings a wealth of international pedigree across formats, along with a proven track record of guiding teams with composure, clarity and intent. Having captained South Africa in white-ball cricket and served as a senior figure within the national set-up for several years, Maharaj’s leadership experience, tactical understanding and consistency make him an invaluable addition in this role. His presence strengthens the balance and direction of the Pretoria Capitals squad as the team heads into the new season.”

The runners-up in the second season finished in fifth place in each of the last two editions of the SA20. Back-to-back poor campaigns have led to changes in the Capitals’ coaching staff, with Sourav Ganguly taking over as head coach and Shaun Pollock appointed assistant coach.

The Keshav Maharaj-led Capitals will begin their season on December 27 with a fixture against the Joburg Super Kings.

Pretoria Capitals Squad: Keshav Maharaj (Captain), Andre Russell, Will Jacks, Sherfane Rutherford, Lungi Ngidi, Dewald Brevis, Lizaad Williams, Craig Overton, Saqib Mahmood, Codi Yusuf, Connor Esterhuizen, Bryce Parsons, Gideon Peters, Junaid Dawood, Will Smeed, Meeka-eel Prince, Bayanda Majola, Wihan Lubbe, Sibonelo Makhanya.
