Chennaiyin FC have strengthened their midfield ahead of the new Indian Super League season by signing experienced defensive midfielder Mohammed Ali Bemammer. The 36-year-old becomes the Marina Machans’ third new addition of the window, following the arrivals of Imran Khan and Alberto Noguera.
Bemammer brings a wealth of experience, with over 300 senior appearances to his name. He has featured more than 40 times in the ISL, scoring four goals during his time with NorthEast United FC. A former Morocco international, he earned 11 caps for his country and scored twice, underlining his pedigree at the top level.
“I am very happy to join this great team, and I hope to help the club achieve titles,” Bemammer said after completing the move. “I am also delighted with the return of football and am looking forward to training with the team.”
Known for his physical presence, positional discipline and ability to screen the defence, Bemammer is expected to provide balance in the middle of the park and add leadership to Chennaiyin’s setup. His honours include the CAF Confederation Cup, CAF Super Cup and the African Nations Championship in 2020, along with multiple domestic trophies. He moved to India in 2023, featuring for NorthEast United, and also has a Durand Cup title to his name from his time in the country.
Chennaiyin head coach Clifford Miranda believes the midfielder’s experience will be crucial. “Bemammer will help us get solidity and stability in the middle,” Miranda said. “His ability to hold the ball under pressure, break opponent attacks and find passes to initiate offensive transitions will add a very good dimension to our play. He brings leadership and character to our squad.”
Meanwhile, Kerala Blasters FC have bolstered their attacking options with the signing of Spanish forward Victor Bertomeu. The versatile attacker, capable of playing as a striker or on either wing, is expected to add depth and energy to the Blasters’ frontline. He becomes Kerala’s fourth foreign signing after Kévin Yoke, Matías Hernández and Marlon Roos, ahead of the truncated ISL season, which is slated to begin on February 14. Kerala are set to face Mohun Bagan Super Giant away from home in the opener, as per the tentative fixtures.
Bertomeu has spent most of his career in Spain, representing clubs such as Gimnàstic de Tarragona, CF Pobla de Mafumet, CF Ascó, CF Peralada and AE Prat. In recent seasons, he has gained overseas experience in Asia, with stints in the Hong Kong Premier League and Indonesia.
Kerala Blasters CEO Abhik Chatterjee welcomed the signing, saying, “Victor is a versatile attacking player who brings energy, experience and a strong work ethic to our squad. We believe he will be a valuable addition as we continue to build a competitive team for the season ahead.”
Both players are expected to link up with their respective squads immediately as preparations gather pace for the upcoming campaign.
