India opener Rohit Sharma on Sunday broke the record for the most sixes in ODI cricket during the first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi. The veteran batter surpassed Shahid Afridi’s tally of 351 in his 269th innings.
Before this match, Rohit had 349 sixes and needed only three more maximums to pass Afridi’s record, which the latter achieved in 369 innings. In the 20th over, Rohit went past the record, breaking it 100 innings faster than Afridi.
With this remarkable feat, Rohit now stands ahead of other famous power hitters such as Chris Gayle, who struck 331 sixes, and Sanath Jayasuriya, who hit 270. Rohit’s six count will continue to rise, as he is the only active player on this list. Among Indians, after Rohit, former captain MS Dhoni has the most ODI sixes, with 222 in 294 innings.
Opening the batting with Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was dismissed early for 18, Rohit scored 57 runs off 51 balls, an innings that included five boundaries and came at a strike rate of 111.76.
During his knock, he was involved in a partnership of 136 runs with Virat Kohli, who scored his 52nd ODI hundred. Marco Jansen trapped Rohit in front of the stumps in the 22nd over to end his innings.
