Former Indian player turned commentator Ravi Shastri has backed Sanju Samson to become a regular part of the playing eleven after he played an impressive innings in the fifth T20I against South Africa in Ahmedabad.
Samson got his chance in the playing eleven after vice-captain Shubman Gill was ruled out due to injury on 16 December in Lucknow. Reacting to Samson’s innings, Shastri voiced his opinion, saying, “When you see him batting like this, you sometimes think, why is he not in the side in the first place? Why should it take an injury to bring him in? He is just a natural for that position at the top of the order. He has already scored three hundreds in T20 cricket, two of them back-to-back against South Africa. He is explosive and dangerous.”
Samson scored 37 runs off 22 balls and was involved in a fifty-plus partnership. His knock was laced with four boundaries and two sixes while opening alongside Abhishek Sharma, who scored 34. Samson’s innings ended in the 9.1 over after an outstanding delivery from George Linde. Tilak Varma also played a brilliant knock, scoring 73 runs off 42 balls, while Hardik Pandya smashed 63 runs off 25 balls. Shivam Dube played an impactful cameo, scoring 10 runs off just three balls, which helped India reach a massive total of 231 for five.
Corbin Bosch picked up two wickets, while Ottneil Baartman and Linde took one each, but all the bowlers proved to be very expensive.
