Shreyas Iyer is touch-and-go for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand — the squad selection for which is likely on Saturday — it is learnt. This comes on the heels of a positive development at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, where Shreyas has been doing rehab after recovering from an internal injury. On Friday, India’s designated ODI vice-captain successfully underwent a match simulation. The next one is scheduled on January 5. The three-match ODI series starts in Vadodara on January 11.
According to a source in the know, Shreyas has completed four high-intensity skill sessions, including batting and fielding, without discomfort. If he clears the second match simulation on Monday, he would be given the go-ahead to return to competitive cricket.
The selection meeting will be held online and before that the Ajit Agarkar-led committee will receive feedback on Shreyas from the BCCI’s medical team. If the middle-order batter clears Monday’s match simulation drills, he might feature in Mumbai’s Vijay Hazare Trophy matches against Himachal Pradesh and Punjab on January 6 and 8 before turning up for the ODIs.
The 31-year-old checked in at the CoE on December 25 for rehab and was progressing well. On December 30, however, he failed three strength tests, each by two marks. His comeback plans hit a road bump, but there have been improvements since.
Shreyas had suffered a spleen laceration and internal bleeding while attempting Alex Carey’s catch during India’s third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25. He was admitted to a hospital in Sydney where a procedure was done to stop the bleeding. After returning home, he steadily recovered, starting his batting sessions in Mumbai earlier this month before going to the CoE.
