Two days after being shockingly snubbed from India’s World Cup squad, Shubman Gill has been named in Punjab’s squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The Indian ODI skipper is expected to be available for the first few matches before linking up with the national team for the three-match ODI series. Along with Gill, Abhishek Sharma and Arshdeep Singh have also been named in the 18-member squad.

The Punjab Cricket Association has not named a captain, but Gill is expected to lead the team. When he is away on national duty, he will be replaced temporarily.

Despite being left out of the squad for the World Cup and the five-match home T20I series against New Zealand, Gill is likely to turn out for Punjab for two or three games.

Prabhsimran Singh, Naman Dhir, Anmolpreet Singh, Ramandeep Singh, Harpreet Brar and Raghu Sharma are the other IPL-bound players set to feature for Punjab in the 50-over tournament. Gurnoor Brar and Krish Bhagat will lead the pace attack.

Punjab have been placed in Group C and will play their first two matches against Maharashtra on December 24 and Chhattisgarh on December 26. These are the games in which Gill and Arshdeep are expected to be available.

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are also set to represent Mumbai and Delhi respectively in the Vijay Hazare Trophy for a set of matches. With no international fixtures scheduled for India until January 11, players who are fit and available will be required to play domestic cricket, as per the BCCI’s diktat.
