Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan praised Abhishek Sharma’s work ethic and acknowledged the role of Yuvraj Singh in the rise of India’s T20I opener.

Ranked number one in the ICC T20I rankings, Abhishek has been the most impactful batter since the last T20 World Cup. No Indian batter has dominated the 20-over format quite like him. With over 1,000 T20I runs at an average of 37.48 and a strike rate of 189.51, these numbers speak volumes about Abhishek’s impact. Having seen the dynamic left-hander from close quarters at SRH, Ishan shared a debrief on his teammate’s preparation.

“He is someone who works hard as well — not just putting in a lot of hours of practice, but also a lot of thought behind it. So it makes sense when he scores such big runs,” he added. “Being looked after by Yuvi paaji (Yuvraj Singh), he benefits a lot from him. We all know how he (Yuvraj) was as a player and how mentally strong he was. So I can imagine what sort of practice he is getting, and he is just making very good use of it when he is out there in the middle.”

Ishan smashed an unbeaten 50-ball 113 as Jharkhand romped past Tripura in Ahmedabad. The Jharkhand skipper helped his team chase down their target inside 18 overs.

Reflecting on his innings, Ishan said: “I think it’s very simple. In cricket, when you open the innings, you just look to score as many runs as you can — pick the odd balls where the bowler comes up with a plan but is not able to execute, and you just go for it. So I was doing the same. Though we lost two wickets early, my intent was very clear: if the ball is there in my slot, I’ll just go for it.”
