Australia batter Steve Smith has revealed that he wanted to take part in the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup but has accepted his fate after being overlooked by the selectors for the marquee event.
After scoring a 40-ball hundred against Sydney Thunder, Smith followed it up with another fifty against Brisbane Heat to continue his red-hot form. However, Smith has been out of Australia’s T20 plans since he last played in 2024.
“I always want to play for Australia in big tournaments,” Smith said after the BBL game between the Sixers and the Heat. “But I think that ship has sailed (the 2026 T20 World Cup). I reckon they’ve got two opening batters who are doing pretty well. I’m relaxed, doing what I can here and having some fun. My main goal, as I’ve said before, is to get into the team when the Olympics comes around. I’d be keen to do that. That would be pretty cool. I’ll keep doing what I’m doing and you never know,” Smith added.
Smith announced his retirement from ODI cricket last year in order to play more franchise competitions around the world and maintain his rhythm.
“I stopped playing one-day cricket to play a few more franchise tournaments so I can keep playing this format and get the rhythm of the game. It can be tough sometimes when you play three games and then go away, only to return and play another three games six months later. So being able to play consistently and build rhythm is really important,” Smith said.
The selectors have once again kept Smith out of the squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series, which will be played in Pakistan.
