Spinner Adam Zampa believes Australia must be ready for tough spin conditions at the upcoming T20 World Cup, especially during the matches in Sri Lanka. Zampa’s comments came after Australia’s 22-run defeat against Pakistan in the first warm-up T20I in Lahore.
Talking about the conditions Australia could face, Zampa said, “Definitely in Sri Lanka. If anything, the challenge in Pakistan is the low bounce; in Sri Lanka it probably spins and bounces a little bit more,” as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Zampa also spoke about how difficult the Lahore pitch was during the match. He said, “Tonight, I think the challenge was definitely slow off the wicket, and then the low bounce gets you on the bottom of the bat. It’s pretty alien for some of the young guys, particularly in the group.” Zampa was Australia’s standout performer, picking up four crucial wickets and conceding 24 runs.
Zampa also highlighted that Australia has a different squad for this World Cup and added, “Obviously, we’ve got a very different squad in this series to what we’ll have in the World Cup. A lot more experience comes back then, but exposing those guys in the middle order, particularly to conditions like those tonight, it’s going to be good for them in the long run.”
He reminded that conditions will change throughout the tournament and said, “The conditions will change throughout the World Cup. The first stage of the tournament, particularly in Sri Lanka, the spinners will play a huge role, but it’llchange, definitely in India, where my experience is that it’stotally different.”
He also praised new players like Mahli Beardman, Jack Edwards and Matt Renshaw, saying the tough game will be good for them and for Australia’s future in T20 cricket.
Australia will start their World Cup campaign on February 11 against Ireland in Colombo.
