Robin Uthappa has shared important advice for India’s current T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav ahead of the upcoming 2026 T20 World Cup. Uthappa believes that the constant change in his batting position is the real reason behind his struggles.
The former India player and 2007 T20 World Cup winner feels that changing positions repeatedly breaks a player’s rhythm. Speaking to PTI Videos, Uthappa said, “Surya shouldn’t shuffle his batting order too much. Constant movement across positions has resulted in a shortage of runs. Stability will help.”
Suryakumar played 21 international matches last year, where he scored only 218 runs at an average of 13.62. His strike rate last year was 123.16, which is concerning in the T20 format. However, in the IPL, he scored 717 runs in 16 matches at a brilliant average of 65.18 and a strike rate of 167.91.
Young batter Tilak Varma has also backed his captain earlier and said, “If he (Suryakumar) gets that confidence then he will be… everyone has watched him, how he can play, so I think at this time if he takes a few balls at that moment, I would not say (to him to) just (try) going over the fielder.”
Tilak further added, “But I was just saying (to him) that try finding the gaps. If you can pierce the field well from your bat, you get a good feel about it and after that you are going to hit. It was not his day, but everyone is waiting for that one innings, if he gets that one innings then everyone knows how dangerous he can be.”
Before entering the World Cup, which starts on January 7, India will play a five-match T20I series against New Zealand from January 21.
