India legend Jhulan Goswami reflected on the importance of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), suggesting that it is a great opportunity for domestic players to learn from overseas players.
In the latest episode of “Backstage with Boria”, Jhulan termed India Women’s maiden ODI World Cup triumph in 2025 as “a watershed moment for women’s cricket.”
She said: “The World Cup win was a watershed moment for women’s cricket. Our girls played phenomenal cricket in that tournament. Talking about WPL, that started in 2023 – the franchises coming together to support women’s cricket in our country was a blessing in itself. Also, domestic girls getting a chance to rub shoulders with quality international players and learn the tricks of the game was huge.”
The first edition of the WPL was played in 2023. So far, in three seasons, Mumbai Indians (MI) have been the most successful team, winning the title twice. On January 9, WPL Season 4 is set to begin, with MI ready to take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Navi Mumbai.
Ahead of the season opener, Jhulan, the bowling coach and mentor of MI, also highlighted the importance of franchises in shaping the mindset of players. Beyond on-field performance, teams focus heavily on preparation, mental toughness, and developing a winning mindset.
According to Jhulan, these lessons pay big dividends when players perform on big stages.
“And Mumbai Indians also prepare the young girls how to win games, prepare for the game, how to be mentally strong et cetera, and those things turn out to be beneficial when they play at the bigger stages like World Cup,” she added.
