Nandni Sharma delivered a memorable performance for Delhi Capitals (DC) in the ongoing Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 on January 11. In her second WPL match, she took a historic five-wicket haul, including a hat-trick against Gujarat Giants (GG) in Navi Mumbai. Nandni is currently the Purple Cap holder with seven wickets in two games.
While addressing the media after the clash against GG, Nandni opened up about the trust and encouragement she received from her captain, Jemimah Rodrigues. “Jemi kept telling me to do my best. She was guiding me ball by ball and that helped me a lot, and it allowed me to stay calm,” Nandni said.
Nandni became the first uncapped player to take a hat-trick and also the first Indian player to claim a five-wicket haul in the history of the WPL.
She also talked about the impact of learning from senior players, especially Marizanne Kapp, and shared, “Marizanne Kapp has helped me a lot. She talks to me about the pitch, situations and what length to bowl. Having someone with that experience guiding you makes things much easier.”
Reflecting on her journey in cricket, Nandni said, “My elder brother used to play cricket and go to the academy every day, and that’s how I started. I joined when I was eight years old, but I was very young and didn’t get many opportunities initially… After the lockdown, I changed my coach and started playing with boys. They used to pick the ball very easily, so I realised I needed to improve my pace and work on variations.”
Nandni also praised the WPL as a platform to grow. “This tournament gives young players a chance to express themselves. There will be tough phases, injuries and times when things don’t go your way, but you have to fight through that and never give up.”
However, her effort went in vain as DC eventually lost the match against GG by just four runs. They are still in search of their first win this season and will face UP Warriorz (UPW) on January 14 in Navi Mumbai.
