India ODI captain Shubman Gill has come out in defence of Rohit Sharma following poor returns with the bat in the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, which the home team lost 2–1.

Rohit scored 61 runs across the three innings at an average of 20.33 and a strike rate of 76.25. In the series decider, played at the Holkar Stadium in Indore, Rohit was given an early reprieve in his innings but could not make the most of the missed opportunity. The India opener was dismissed for 11 while his team was chasing 338. Despite Virat Kohli’s century and half-centuries from Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana, the home side lost both the match and the series.

“I think he’s been in terrific form, right from the Australia series and also during the South Africa series. As I said, you won’t always be able to convert the starts that you get. I think he got some starts in the first couple of ODIs. As a batter, you always want to convert those starts, make them count and turn them into hundreds, but it’s not possible to do that every time,” Gill said during the post-match press conference.

Before the start of the series, Rohit scored a century for Mumbai in a Vijay Hazare Trophy match. In the international arena, he was India’s top scorer on the tour of Australia and also struck two half-centuries in the home series against South Africa.

Against an inexperienced New Zealand bowling attack, Rohit was expected to perform well, but he failed to do so.

Rohit will not be in action for India when the Men in Blue next play an ODI series in June later this year.
