Anush Agarwalla is a fabulous representative of the new generation of Indian athletes which knows what it aspires for and how to make it come true. India’s top Dressage rider at age 24, Anush Agarwalla will hold his own amidst a galaxy of top-notch panelists in India’s biggest sports conclave, Trailblazers 2.0, at the ITC Royal Bengal, Kolkata, on March 7 and 8.
For a nation that pays more attention to rags-to-riches stories, India would do well to track the determination of a Ballygunge boy to court success in a sport of his choice. Early on, he would travel to Delhi each weekend to learn the nuances of Dressage and then he moved countries to live in the Fleyenhof Equestrian Centre in Germany.
He showed at the Hangzhou Asian Games last year that when he sets his mind on something, he would go to every extent possible to achieve that. He was desperate for his coach (and mentor) Hubertus Schmidt to be present by the ringside at the Asian Games. He moved heaven and earth to ensure that 2004 Olympic champion Hubertus Schmidt would be at hand to guide him.

Having succeeded in that quest, he teamed up with Etro (mount) to play the biggest part in India winning team gold (along with Hriday Chheda, Divyakriti Singh and Sudipti Hajela) and his nailing a bronze medal in the individual events. It was the first medal for India in individual Dressage in Asian Games history.
His path-breaking achievement brought along recognition by way of inclusion in Development group in TOPS and the Arjuna Award. But he knows that much work lies ahead of him. He is awaiting confirmation of a berth in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and will prepare to show that Sir Caramello Old and he belong with the world’s best.
The remarkable thing about Anush Agarwalla is that he did not rest on his oars after the Asian Games success on Etro. He returned to his training base to reunite with Sir Caramello Old and accumulated Olympic ranking points with sharp focus and commitment that would have done a monk proud. It is such clarity of thought that makes him stand out in a crowd.
Blessed as he is with splendid communication skills, you can be sure that, Anush Agarwalla would speak up for the new generation of athletes, each of whom is keen to keep India’s flag flying at international arena. His hailing from Kolkata is but an additional factor as his mature articulation will echo thoughts of all young Indian athletes at Trailblazers 2.0 next month.
