England’s Test captain Ben Stokes believes that the final Test of the ongoing Ashes series 2025/26 at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) is a “huge” game for his side despite the series already being lost.
Speaking to reporters in the press conference, Stokes said: “This is a huge game, we’re walking out there playing for England, and it’s going to take all 11 of us to go out there and get a result. Australia get to lift the urn and they’ve won the Ashes but every time you walk out and play for your country, regardless of the opposition, regardless of where the series is at, it’s just as important.”
England finally defeated Australia after being 3-0 down in the series, winning the fourth Test by four wickets at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Josh Tongue starred with a five-wicket haul in the first innings, while Brydon Carse picked up four wickets in the second innings.
The pitch at the MCG triggered widespread criticism across the cricketing world as the match finished within two days. The surface received an “unsatisfactory” rating from the ICC. Stokes also shared his thoughts on the pitch at the SCG.
“I don’t think a groundsman has ever been under as much pressure as the guy here this week. We all play a good game by pretending we know what we’re doing looking at the wicket. We try and act like we know what we’re doing when we look down at the pitch, rubbing it and knocking it but no-one really has a clue to be honest,” he added.
The final match of the ongoing Ashes series is set to begin on January 4, 2026.
